Get ready for Home Move
By arlene | August 30, 2008
Moving home is often a stressful and tiring process. By planning well beforehand, you will guide yourself through the process with more ease and peace of mind.
Make a checklist to ensure that you remember what needs to be done. Don’t forget the small things: defrost the fridge in time and arrange for pets to be transported. Are the keys for all the doors in the house accounted for? Did you have the telephone disconnected and have you cancelled the newspaper? This is very important as it is often the little things that are easily forgotten.
Before moving to your new house, ensure that everyone who needs to know is informed of your new address. That includes banks, stores where you have accounts, family, friends and the like. Draw up a standard notification letter that can be sent to all the relevant people.
Make sure that you make use of a reliable removal company. If you are unsure of which company you should select, it is advisable to use the services of a well-known and established removal company. Do not choose a cheap one if that company is not reliable — you might suffer more damage this way. Talk to friends and find out from whom they received good service. You can also ask the removal company for referrals.
If it does not increase the cost of occupational rent, try to move to your new home during off-peak times, as moving during the more popular last week of the month costs more. Most reputable removal organisations will offer attractive deals during the middle of the month. Be sure to get quotes from more than one reputable company.
It is always a good idea to clean curtains, rugs, bedding, etc. before you pack up and move. This will ensure that you can unpack quickly and easily when you move into your new home. Remember to leave the house you’re vacating clean for the new owners.
Start packing on time. You will be able to organise your packing much more effectively, while reducing the stress of moving home. This way you will be finished packing without having to stuff unorganised items in boxes.
It is also important to keep your belongings logically packed. Keep items from the kitchen together, items from the bedroom in another box, etc. (Try to pack them as they will go in your new home.) There will be no need to search for your belongings excessively and you’ll complete unpacking much quicker and smoother. Have a box with essentials such as a first aid kit, bathroom supplies and a kettle. Clearly mark it as “last on / first off” and have it readily available at all times.
It is advisable to keep records of boxes and their contents. This will help you to locate all items easily when you arrive at your new home and to make sure that you can check all items. Be at your new home before the removal company gets there. This will allow you to monitor the unloading and to check whether all your belongings arrived safely and undamaged.
Decide beforehand where to place your furniture in your new home. Try to get loose carpets there first in order to arrange furniture immediately when you move in.
